contact to 0 lost

Thanks to all who have helped with my upgrade from Ubuntu Hoary to Ubuntu 
Breezy.  All now seems well and no error messages anywhere EXCEPT in 
Xsession.errors:
"Window manager warning: lost connection to display ':0';
"most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
"the window manager"

So I get a lovely grey X screen at the resolution I expect, but no transfer 
into kwm/kde (or any other window manager for that matter).

How can I fix this?
