LOCAL_APPS on thinclients?

Has anyone gone further with scripting support for LOCAL_APPS  (in the LTSP
for rh/fedora sense), or perhaps done it manually?

This mostly involves setting up NIS (ypserv on the server, ypbind on the
client), mounting /home via nfs, running sshd on the clients (and getting
all the keys right), and making sure hostnames are set on the clients via
dhcp.

I've tried to do all this, but failed so far and could use some assistance.
