I too have one of these devices in my laptop. I've installed the
restricted_modules package, but there are no lt_modem, and lt_serial
modules in it.
As to building 3rd party kernel modules, make certain you have
build-essential, and the kernel headers (linux-headers-$9uname -r)-586, and
gcc 3.4 debs isntalled. Thens export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-3.4 you should be
able to compile them then.
If you get this working, Id like to hear about it.
