xterm not honoring ~/.X11/app-defaults

I'm seting up a 5.10 machine as a potential replacement for an older
achine. The plder machine has years of tweaking on it.

I tared up ~/.X11 on the old ahcine, untared i in my home directory on the
new ubuntu machien, and fire up xter.

Unfortunatley it did not come up with the colrs/fonts I have in the
app-defaults file for it.

I thought this was basic X functionaqlity. Any ideas as to why it's not
being honored?
