ALSA has fallen and can't get up!

   This is the error message that I get when I set the switch '-ao esd':

   This is what is in the error window that comes up when I launch Audacity:
   "There was an error initializing the audio i/o layer.
   You will no be able to play or record audio
   Error: Host error"
