Hi:

I've been somewhat unhappy with the fonts in Openoffice. Not so much
with what is available for the document, but the fonts used in the
menus. I saw in another thread this line:
| Fonts in /usr/share/openoffice should be recognized by all versions of
| OpenOffice.

So I had a look at this directory:
xxx:/usr/share/openoffice $ ls -l
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2005-05-21 16:05 bin
xxx:/usr/share/openoffice $ cd bin/
xxx:/usr/share/openoffice/bin $ ls -l
total 8
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4239 2005-04-27 10:31 openoffice-xlate-lang
xxx:/usr/share/openoffice/bin $

No fonts. So I went to Openoffice.org and found that the recommended
way to add fonts is to run 'spadmin' and hit the 'fonts' tab. This
program is a link to /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice

When it runs, it is just a printer administration tool. There is no
'font' tab unless you go into the printer properties. There you can add
fonts, but only printer replacement fonts.

I've looked in Synaptic to see if there are any fonts that can be added
to Openoffice and it mentions that 'msttcorefonts' is available, however
this package is not listed by Synaptic.

I'm running Openoffice 1.1.3-8ubuntu2.3 which seems to be the latest
version for Hoary. I just upgraded from Warty a week ago, and OOo has
definitely taken a step backward in appearance.

Maybe I'm taking the wrong approach with adding fonts. I'm not sure
that all of the above steps are for the menus fonts vice the document
fonts. It might be an x.org thing, but all the other applications seem
fine. Just OOo that looks wonky.

fc-list gives me a list of 91 installed fonts btw. Don't know if it
means anything in this case.

Sorry if this is a little long. But it's the steps that I've taken to
try to resolve this.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Ed
