You could try issuing "sudo update-alternatives --x-session-manager" and
"sudo update-alternatives --x-window-manager" which will allow you to
change the default from KDE to Gnome or whatever other alternatives you
have available.  Then you could go from there.  Sorry that I have no
idea why KDE is being so persistent despite being supposedly
uninstalled.
