I'm trying to build a case now that there is something strange going on
with static IP addresses in Ubuntu. I posted something a few days ago
"ssh Connection reset by peer problems " where I've been experiencing
unreliable network connections that show up in ssh. Of course I got no
response to that post. I though I had traced the unreliability down to
difference in the install on two Dell platforms, but now it is pointing
to the difference is between using DHCP or static address.
I had the system up all weekend on a couple connections (with a DHCP
address), one of them running a script (AppleScript terminal script)
that did a date command every minute. Those connections stayed up all
weekend.
This morning, figuring I had a band-aid, I did two actions. I did a
Ubuntu Update manager, and changed the network address to a static IP
address. I did a little minor checking between the two and did not see
a problem with the update. After changing the network to static and
running my script, the connection will be reset after about 20 minutes.
I tried it twice with the same results. Changed back to DHCP and it's
been going for over an hour.
My post points to some other details in previous posts, but when I
first tryed to find the problem I would get things like "Socket
somthing" failed. Then it would refuse connection of port 22 (ssh) for
about 2 minutes, and then it would connect.
Again, something strange going on and I've wasted a few hours a day for
about two week and the Ubuntu list and other resources I've tried
(bugzilla) don't seem to be of much help.
