GDM : can't set a background image ... bug ?

i am not talking about gdm, but the gdm config files = advanced
hacking. ;)

the idea is very simple... i have a great gdm graphical theme running
and the same wallpaper used with the gdm theme "should" be displayed
while the splash shows up. everything seems to be running okay except
the picture not showing up.

believe me, it is not the first time i have done this and it works on
other distros right now, but not in ubuntu hoary.
