Quoting linux <vivalinux at fastmail.fm>:

KDE and GNOME are old concurents. Main differences are these:
1.base graphics library: KDE is using QT while GNOME is bilt on GTK+,
2.communication between applications: KDE is using ICE protocol, built in X
window system; GNOME applications talks using ORBIT – one of CORBA
implementation.
KDE is a bit faster than GNOME and provides better software, because it is 2
years elder than GNOME. UNIX community selected GNOME as main UNIX environment
because GTK+ absolutely free, while QT usage has some restrictions (read them
on http://www.trolltech.com/ site).
XFCE belongs to lightway desktops community: it provides much less service but
does not use so much resources thus is more suitable for elder computers. I
should recommend to use it on portable computers with memory less than 512M.
