You could try 'telnet host-name 25' and see if you get a response. That
will tell you if the port is blocked or not.
Personally, I would not run sendmail as the mail daemon (if this is waht
you are doing). I would use exim or postfix, they are both much easier
to configure!
I don't think sendmail is installed by default on Ubuntu. I think,
sendmail is a link to postfix.
