dual boot issues

Hi, I've Windows 2000 and Hoary configured to dual boot using Grub on
this laptop. Generally they work fine, but sometimes if I try to reboot
from one OS into the other OS the system will hang while booting. In
Hoary it seems to seize up starting Hotplug. In Windows it seems to
seize up when the little blue bar is about a third of the way across.
(In this case I actually prefer the Linux techno-gibberish). My guess
is that it's probing for hardware and for some reason doesn't like what
it finds (maybe the other OS has left a bit of memory in a mess or
something). I'd like to investigate further but I'm not sure where to
look. I could be wrong, but 'dmesg' seems to only display the results
from the last successful bootup, and /var/log/syslog doesn't seem to
show anything particularly untoward. Is it seizing up before it has a
change to write to the logs or am I looking in the wrong files? I
suppose it would be too much to expect Windows to provide a decent log,
although I guess I could try 'step-by-step' safe mode.
I'll have a fiddle around but in the meantime has anyone got any
suggestions?
Nick
P.S. Removing Windows is not an option, at least not for now. ;)
