System Name in Application Panel?

Thanks, James, for your suggestion.  

I created a small image as you indicated and assigned it to the panel.
Unfortunately, gnome tiled the image all the way from the right to the
left, and thus the system name text obscured the menus and the date/time
information.

Any further ideas?
