If one is expecting and prepaired for "grief" it's usually not all that bad.

One other item, re backup of data 

.. many now have read/write cd units on their machines (desktop, laptop or both) and I forgot to mention a third and very practical way to back up one's data (in addtion to having a BACKUP file on the given hard drive itself, and that is if you have the ability to write to a CD, use it. Use formatted blank CDs to back up your files. Chief advantage here is that the CD can hold about 800mb of data. A new hard drive can (depending on the size after formatting) hold a lot more. The memory cards can (so far) hold a lot less.
