Hoary GDM Problem

Hi folks,
my fathers machine has been running for a few weeks. All has been well
except this morning, he rang with a GDM problem. GDM starts, gets to the
pizza symbol and NEVER moves on.

I've killed X, used startx  from his account or mine and X is ok. I've
changed the graphical greeter in case that was corrupted but it made no
change. I've had a quick look at /var/log/messages and dmesg and can't
see anything there that looks like a graphics problem, besides X works
from startx.

 From the startx X session I ran Synaptic and did a reinstall of GDM and
GDM-themes. Still no luck.

The GDM log doesn't seem any different to my working machine so no clues
there.

Any advice would be appreciated.
