Re: help (Msgs 2,3,4). No I can't see any error msgs & yes it will boot the "live" Knoppix cd.
I'll have to get back to you on the details of my Notebook, it is however an ACER 1.6Ghz
512M RAM, Pentium 3 equivalent.

TOTALLY new to all this. Ive been "lost in the forests of Windows" ( more like Blair Witch really ).

Anyway Iv'e been given a copy of UBUNTU, (for x86)and tried to load the "live" disc to "have a look" ( I can't install (yet) as I'm paying off my notebook)and it will not boot.

It comes up with some suggestions on what to type to get it to boot; I tried this but still nothing.

I did have a copy of Linux's Mandrake 7 a while back and totally enjoyed it (but it had a few problems and thus I don't use it now).

Could anyone help with this?

Regards
Big Al

Can you boot of "ANY" other CD?
Some laptops have a "press F12 for boot menu" when they POST.. if you get that use it to tell it to boot from the CD ROM.

 Hello Lindsay,

hey, finally you invented a brand new quoting style.
I call it FQO "Full Quote Only" ;-)

Doesn't that make it interleaved quoting instead of interleaved posting?

Thank for the suggestion Christoph

I have examined the modules listing and there seem to be quite a few
relating to sound. How would I determine which are relevant?

I have included the listing below.

Ah, I understand.
The CD is in the boot sequence of the BIOS?
Busmaster on?
CD is master or slave? (some BIOSes don´t like booting from slaves, of
whatever reason - I had to put an IDE CDrom into my Server box on IDE0,
because it didn´t like the SCSI Cdrom).

Maybe it will help ;-)

Hey Peter,

Thanks for the tips! The CDR is set to boot in the bios, but it's the slave
to the hard disk, I'll try swap them around. What is the Busmaster?

Thanks,
Luke.
