I did a Google search, and found that Ralink has released code to the open 
source community and there is a project to provide Linux drivers at:

http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

This should allow you to get the driver you need and install it for your 
friend. No need to recompile the kernel, just load the module.
