Failed to initialize HAL - No internet, cd or usb

if you can make your cdrom work (try: sudo modprobe ide-cdrom) you could
use sudo apt-cdrom to make the cd aware to apt, then install ubuntu-base
and ubuntu-desktop, these two should fix it....
