Hoary's kernel has ALSA 1.0.6. It does not support the Darla20.

'alsa-source' is in universe (containing ALSA 1.0.8), which is
unsupported and thus not compiled by default.

Enable the universe repo and install 'alsa-source', 'build-essential',
and 'linux-headers-$(uname -r)'. Then follow the directions in
/usr/share/doc/alsa-source/README.Debian.
