esd and sdl_mixer (was: Re: Free beer for a sound advice that helps!)

Didn't you get _any_ responses to the message?

I could double that, some fine Finnish beer to go..  (this will become 
a fancy chain letter? :)

My issue:  getting SDL_Mixer and system Ubuntu (Hoary) sounds co-exist.

I did find some esd.conf solutions to this, but what troubles me is no 
clear indication in the Ubuntu Wiki as to the _right_ way to configure 
sounds.  ALSA, ESD, polypaudio.  All are named, and some favor this, 
others..

Could someone with Official Voice give a strong "do this, don't that" 
so that this kind of issues would seize to be on the list?  Thanks.
