ndiswrapper - FATAL: Error inserting ndiswrapper

Hello all!

I installed Hoary from a nightly ISO from two nights ago, and did a 
dist-upgrade (which upgraded like 85MB of data).

I installed a new kernel and booted into it for my CPU since I have 2GB 
of memory in my laptop and a P4 w/hyperthreading. 
(I "sudo su -" to get a root prompt below)

[root]$ uname -a
Linux fmerenda 2.6.10-5-686-smp #1 SMP Thu Mar 24 15:12:53 
GMT 2005 i686 GNU/Linux

I installed the kernel-headers.
I installed ndiswrapper-utils via apt, as per 

http://www.ubuntulinux.org/support/documentation/howto/ndiswrapper

I tried to modprobe ndiswrapper (as root) and got the following error:

[root]$ modprobe ndiswrapper
FATAL: Error inserting ndiswrapper
(/lib/modules/2.6.10-5-686-smp/misc/ndiswrapper.ko): Operation not permitted

my links look correct (I think):

[root]$ ll -ld /lib/modules/2.6.10-5-686-smp
drwxr-xr-x  6 root root 4096 Mar 30 09:09 /lib/modules/2.6.10-5-686-smp

I got the same exact error when installing ndiswrapper from source with version
0.12 of ndiswrapper.

I'd appreciate any help on this, since I will need wireless when I bring this
laptop into work! :)
