which kernel for athlonXP-official answer needed

I have an Athlon XP 1700+, I am curious about this too, and would not
mind hearing a detailed, technical explanation from someone really in
the know.
That said, I am in hurry, as I tried both the 686 and K7 Kernels, and
could not detect any improvment whatsoever with either of them, over the
default 386 Ubuntu Kernel, so I removed them.
Maybe it's of some use for some very specific and super heavy task, but
for normal use, I really doubt it's of any use.
Would be great if people didn't have to guess what kernel is best, and
if the Ubuntu installer simply put the appropriate Kernel from the
start, as there is plenty enough space left on the install CD for other
kernels, or whatever package.
