Hoary live preview - widescreen displays

I've just booted the hoary live preview disk on my Dell Inspiron 8500
laptop which has a widescreen display, but the full dimensions are not
being used.
The panel has pixel dimensions of 1680x1050 (WSXGA), but I am getting a
display of size 1400x1050 (SXGA).
The /etc/X11/xorg.conf file has a display mode of "1680x1050" (only), so
the pixel dimensions of the panel appear to be correctly detected, but
the xorg.log file indicates that this is an unknown mode and drops back
to 1400x1050. Looking in that log indicates that X only knows about one
widescreen mode - 1920x1200 (WUXGA).
It would be nice if X knew about the other widescreen modes - there is
also a 1280x800 mode (WXGA).
It also gets the resolution wrong - it has the server setup as 75dpi,
whereas my panel has a resolution of 130dpi. I was under the impression
that the DCC information contained the physical dimensions of the panel
(from which the dpi can be calculated).
