I'm using icewm.  I had it running with Libranet and when I installed 
Ubuntu, kept my existing /home directory (on a separate partition) and 
Ubuntu picked up icewm, presumably from the entry I had in ~/.xsession:

#!/bin/sh

/usr/bin/icewmbg&
exec icewm
xset dpms 600 1800 0 

If I log in as another user (without that .xsession), I get Gnome.
