Firefox instability in Hoary

Shaggy: It's a Gnome problem, it happens to me whenever I save stuff to
the Desktop without physically dragging an icon onto it.

I mentioned before that my desktop machine's FF is fine but my laptop's
is really flaky wherever you get any kind of text field control either
on the page or in the FF interface and yes, I also can't save any files
unless I do an explicit "Save as..."

Trivially the only difference between the two is that I've been using
Ubuntu on my laptop since Warty and have incrementally upgraded to
Hoary over time; on the desktop I installed Warty then immediately
upgraded via Synaptic to Hoary before running anything else.

On the laptop I've tried completely removing FF and all the themes and
extensions, rebooting, then reinstalling it but the same problem arises
