yea,  I can open up the disk and see everything.  Can open text, html
documents, folders and look at their properties without a problem.

I can also do 
ls
 (some of this is starting to make sense)

tab at ubuntutab:/media/cdrom0 $ ls
casper  dists  doc  install  isolinux  md5sum.txt  pics  pool  preseed
 README.diskdefines  tools  ubuntu
tab at ubuntutab:/media/cdrom0 $

 and see them (which is what I guess you meant)-

What I not tried is copying to the disc (still figuring out the
command) without using Natalus (sp?) which would let me know if that
is causing the error (?).   Cause when I tell Natalus to burn at 1x it
takes less than 10 minutes, which seems rather quick, and the word
"buffer" pops up (I am confused about the right terminology) in the
error message.
