I imagine that /dev/hda1, 2 or 3 is an extended partition which just
holds other partitions.  Therefore, grub ignores it, and the
corresponding numbers are shifted by one.  Try running `sudo fdisk -l
/dev/hda' to see if you have an extended partition.
