Warty and Hoary Installation Problem

I tried with
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1
(also exchanged "hda1" for "hda", "sda1" and "sda") but got
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition
Never tried "initrd" after that. I have three HDDs in my machine, two IDE
discs, and one SATA disc. Choosed to format only the SATA disc during the
partitioning (the automatic one in Warty/Hoary installation CD), and then
accepted to make two new partitions, one being a swap.
