pppoe problem

i was able to configure my alcatel speedtouch usb modem as per the
instructions here:
http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/ubuntu/index.html.

but, even though ubuntu recognized my hardware fine and created the
network interface nas0 (it did indeed work: i am able to create an ip
address via ifconfig and ping to it). the problem is that i am not
able to connect to my ISP. when the dial script starts it hangs on
``pppd call''. the script hangs on ``pppoe discovery''.

i also tried an alternative method using ``pppoeconfig'' but it hangs
on the same process.
