Firefox instability in Hoary

I've had a similar strange occurrence with Firefox on my laptop but I'm
also running FF/Ubuntu on my desktop with no apparent problems...

On the laptop as soon as I use any kind of form control, including the
location bar or search bar, it just bats out immediately: no message,
no warning. Running it from a terminal just says "Segmentation
fault"... but that's it.

Anybody got ideas about what's going on, or how I might wrest a more
useful diagnosis?
