"Computer"-Menu actions lag by up to half a minute

Hi everybody,

Sometimes, it takes up to half a minute or more for the commands
"Computer -- Log Out" and "Computer -- Lock Screen" to come up with a
reaction after I initiated them.
The system simply doesn't seem to do anything initially, but after this
long break it then reacts accordingly.
Most of the time that is at least: sometimes, when nothing happens
seems to be going to happen at all, I then need to reboot the machine
(via the console) in order for the system to become stable again.
(Killing X works from time to time, but more often X will not come up
after killing it anymore ...)

Any idea what's going on and how to fix this?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Markus

PS:
The system is Ubuntu 4.10 running on a Mobile P3 1GHz, the graphics chip
is an Intel i830 (X' driver used is i810).
