No sound when playing .wmv files

I also have these results. I did the procedure with the mplayer
w32codecs, and the same .wmv files have intermittent clicks and pops
instead of sound. This is with totem-xine as well as with xine.
I would check with mplayer, but I haven't been able to successfully
install it.
