trying to install ubuntu

We need more detail ! Give us some...

Where does it stops exactly, what happens ? How big is your hard drive,
and how much RAM do you have ? 128MB is a bare minimum for Gnome, 256 is
great and 512 marvelous. If you don't want the desktop and just want the
command line, I think you will need at least 32MB of RAM anyway, as IIRC
that's what the installer needs.
