trying to install ubuntu

Hi Mark, 

Just a quick question, did you download the CD from Ubuntu or did you
request for one that arrived in the mail? If you did request for one,
did you try the Live CD included? Ubuntu will definitely run in your
machine although not in the usual fashion (check the wiki entry
running ubuntu on low spec machines). Running the Live CD is a good
way to start learning Linux instead of installing it on a machine.

If you downloaded the CD (as an iso file), it could be caused by bad
media or bad burn; or wrong checksum of the downloaded file.
