hoary installation report, no sound

Hello,
An electronic discounter here in Austria sells a PC (and just the PC,
without any peripherals) with a SUSE 9 for 267 euros, a good opportunity
for an "experimental playground" I thought- when you buy, there is no
operating system installed, just the SUSE CD is shipped with it. It's
branded ChilliGreen, the box is a AMD Sempron Processor (2,4 GHz), 80GB
Harddisk, Via Chipset, M7VIG400 Pro Motherboard, 256 MB RAM, DVD ROM.
I didn't install SUSE, I installed Hoary ;-) and was very impressed:
After half an hour the installation from CD was ready, another quarter
of an hour or so, various updates, installation of my ADSL and a very
little bit of tuning and the box was ready for work. I am writing this
mail from this box...
To put a long story short: The only thing that did not work out of the
box is sound... I don't get any sound: not the system sounds, not with
other programs, it is just silent. (OK, the german umlaute -öäü and so
on on the console do not work yet, too)
After googling around I found quite some posts describing similar
problems, but none of the solutions there worked for me.
(Booting the computer with a morphix live CD, sound works, so the card
is working)
It seems my knowledge of sound and LINUX is a little outdated, too.
Can someone enlighten me how sound should work: There is the polypaudio,
there is ALSA, dominated by GNOME . how should they work together? What
config-files are concerned...Is this sound issue with hoary a GNOME
issue - some posts I found gave me sometimes the impression?
I don't get any messages in log files (/var/log/messages, dmesg), or
when I execute alsa-progs on the console...
As it seems, that sound and hoary sometimes don't go together, maybe we
can collect experiences, solutions, the knowledge at the moment?
Thanks in advance,
Albin
