i have tried gparted before. it looks promising, but kept on crashing
on me whenever i tried to resize any partition, mounted or not. keep in
mind that this was a few months ago, so it may be different now if
there's a newer version available.  ;) 

also, if the partition you are trying to resize is currently mounted,
then you won't be able to resize it since it's being used(i think). 

for example, you can't resize your linux partition if you boot up your
system from that same partition you are trying to resize. in that case,
you'll probably need to use one of those Live CDs, either Ubuntu Live,
Gnoppix, Knoppix, etc... whichever is most suitable to the task.
