samba i/o errors copying multiple files

same here.  the samba server is debian-testing, client is ubu-hoary
using cifs.  Just started happening a day or two ago.

I get i/o errors from the commandline too, so it's not just gnome. 
Also tried wireless and wired.  No change.  I've also found that I
cannot delete anything in my home directory on the samba server (i/o
errors), but other shares seem unaffected.

I've not had time yet to poke around more.  Maybe I can crank up the
debug output on samba later today, or try smbclient, or ... something.
