Recovering a damaged ext3 system, where to start?

Just to add my own experience, I confirm what all the others said.
The other day, Warty checked the disk at boot, stopped halfway, and
instructed me to run fsck by myself, and that it would cause severe
damage to my file system !
Like you I didn't have a clue about all this !
So I just rebooted, started Hoary (as I put on a different hard drive
than Warty), and just ran 'fsck /dev/hdb5', and pressed the 'return' key
a hundred times (almost !) without understanding any of the technical
questions. Then said a prayer, crossed my fingers, rebooted, and Warty
was back to life !! Everything worked as normal, no data lost
whatsoever, all perfect.
So just tell your brother to keep his finger on the return key, and it
should do it ! ;o)
