Lost the menu line in Gnumeric (Warty)

I've had Gnumeric running for some days, when I tried to start a new
window today the menu line was gone. On Friday I ran some application
which started Gnome, or some part of it, on my remote Cygwin display,
so I guess something was written to my dot files and which fouls up my
system.

I tried reinstalling gnumeric (with Synaptic) and got this output:

Successfully applied all changes. You can close the window now

After a bit of googling I found a Debian discussion
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-gtk-gnome/2004/11/msg00093.html) which
claimed that there could be some mplayer oddities and claimed that the
user needed to run "sudo update-desktop-database -v" so I did, but I
got the same "CRITICAL" messages. I then uninstalled mplayer-custom,
which I haven't used for some months (or never) and reran
update-desktop-database which then without giving me the "CRITICAL"
messages (but with a lot of lines like this one:

    File '/usr/share/applications/devhelp.desktop' lacks MimeType key

but I assume that is something else missing!?). I then reinstalled
gnumeric again and now the output was nice and clean - but the menu is
still gone.

Anyone know how to reintroduce the menu in Gnumeric?
