Japanese Input solved

I'm guessing you're getting these messages through email, so editing my
post won't get more information out to you...

but here's what happens when I use "LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8 oowriter" to
open openoffice.

my IME key combination (now <control>j) does not switch the IME. But I
have the uim panel icon installed, and I can click on it and select
"hiragana", "katakana" etc, and the icon itself does change to the
hiragana 'a' character. But even when this works, openoffice still
only types roman characters, even when I"m using the Kochi Gothic font.

Any ideas what I might try? in your case, how does openoffice behave?

I THINK the only files I've edited to make this all work so far is the
.gnomerc file and the .uim file. At this point, I'm getting the steps
I took a little bit jumbled. I followed that first JapaneseHowTo
tutorial and then followed what people said here.
