PPC Kernel Update HDD LED nerves

An agreed distraction.
While I looked for a solution, I set a pack of gum in front of the
light.

The feature does indeed appear to be part of the latest kernel
update...
and to my surprise, four earlier versions of my kernel reside in /boot
along with 2.6.10-4-powerpc, including 2.6.10-3-powerpc,
which uses the sleep light as intended
The former kernel is linked as /boot/vmlinux and /boot/initrd.img,
the latter "working" set is linked as /boot/vmlinux.old and
/boot/initrd.img.old.

yaboot most conveniently offers two kernel-choices at boot,
"Linux" and "old", each reffering to the respective links-to-kernels.
Choosing "old" at the yaboot prompt resolves the awful blinky-problem,
and I haven't yet seen any nasty side effects of the "downgrade".

You could add an entry to your /etc/yaboot.conf explicitly for
2.6.10-3,
a known "safe" choice. Place that new entry before the others
to have it serve as the default choice.

Happy no-blinking,
-Hrothgar.
