Compiling the bcm5700 module

Hello,
I have tried various searches with no help, so I am trying the list.
I have had situations in the past (with Fedora Core) where using the
Broadcom 5700 driver with my Dell laptop has worked better with Cisco
VPN software than the default tg3 driver. I had to go to the Broadcom
site and follow their directions to get it to work.
Ubuntu has the bcm5700 source package available, so I am trying to use
that. It says I should learn to use make-kpkg. Tried that without
success. After many trials, the closest I got was "sudo make-kpkg
--added_modules bcm5700". It complained that there was "No rule to
make target `init/main.o' ..."
Google searching led me to 'module-assistant'. It keeps complaining
that the headers for 2.6.10-4-686 aren't there - but they are.
I am obviously missing something basic to installing a new module.
Thanks for any information.
