Well, I've figured that I have the same problem on the Ubuntu box I'm
setting up now. I got the sound working for my account, but not my
mother's, which is going to be the main account.
Of the information you gave in an earlier mail I figured that all that
had to be done was to add some read/write/execute permissions for
/tmp/.esd, something a la:
chmod -R g+rwxs /tmp/.esd; chgrp -R audio /tmp/.esd
but when I did, it didn't work for the other accounts - and it even
stopped working for mine!? Reverting to the original permissions:
drwx------ 2 affi affi 4096 2005-03-04 15:04 /tmp/.esd
srwxr-xr-x 1 affi affi 0 2005-03-04 15:04 /tmp/.esd/socket
worked.
I guess I can nuke the .esd directory and rerun the disable/enable
exercise for the main user, but in general I'll vote for a fix before
release, especially since Ubuntu is targeting the desktop market and a
desktop without sound isn't that funky these days.
