Direct boot into command line

Hi

 I have installed Ubuntu Warty on my brand new Pc.
It is running along with Win Xp.
The install was smooth w/o any problems.
I can log in directly to Gnome.

I am a slack user and hence am more used to the command line.
How do i directly start at the command line prompt instead of GUI.
Also I should be able to start X from the command line whenever needed
