Yes, Alsa is working for the other users and I have a similar
/etc/asound.conf, so I guess I'll have to go with that. It's more of a
pain in the neck, though. I have three teenagers (and two
trying-to-be-teenager children) who listen to a *lot* of music while
using Ubuntu (which is our secondary homework machine). Even my wife
likes to listen to her iTunes playlist while working occassionally on
Ubuntu (I use slimserver to stream iTunes to Linux).

If I have to play tech support for head-bangers, I want to know what
direction I should head in -- try to prepare for a "fixed" polypaudio
or give up on it and go all-alsa. The polypaudio is working perfectly
for me, but I'm almost always the first to log in after the infrequent
reboots.
