apt-get install mozilla-mplayer [this will install some custom mplayer
that only runs thru firefox, otherwise it will freeze]
on top of that I installed real player 10 gold from the 'official site'

And i can run any type of stream :
audio ? xmms ; rhythmbox ; beep-media-player
apple.com/trailers? mplayer auto starts smoothly
rfi.fr real media streams ? real player 10 gold
gamespot's windows video awsome reviews ? mplayer

I like vlc , but its way under mplayer firefox support !! [tested on
firefox .9 and backported 1.0
