Creating a boot floppy

Thanks for the link. Am I right in thinking that the procedure outlined
in the link is performed once Ubuntu has been installed, or can it be
done during the installation process?

That's correct. The procedure as described in the link is performed
once Ubuntu has been installed. My idea would be to skip writing the
MBR during installation, then do the thing before you reboot the
installed system.

If necessary, boot with a rescue CD (like the Ubentu live CD), and
perform the operation from there.
