Unusual dependencies on ubuntu-desktop

Why does half the stuff on ubuntu depend on ubuntu-desktop???

I saw the tutorial diveintopython  being installed. I asked synaptic to
remove it, and it mentioned that to remove it ubuntu desktop has to be
remove too! Why in the world????
