gnome display manager fails to start at boot

I had already tried this in the hope of getting some error
messages but the 'reply' is only:
 * Starting GNOME Display Manager...                  [fail]

Same as in the kernel bootup messages.

But giving only 'gdm' at the promt comes back with:
 gdm: error while loading shared libraries: libpangoxft-1.0.so.0: cannot
 open shared object file: No such file or directory.

'dpkg -l libpango*' however shows that both
'libpango1.0-0' and 'libpango1.0-common' are installed and seem to be OK.

I don't understand what is happening.
