How to rip a mixed mode CD?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't noticed a UI for unmounting a
cdrom w/o ejecting it.  From helping my girlfriend with Ubuntu I've
gotten used to giving advice that avoids the command-line when
possible.
